Let’s face it, we are all trying to forget that summer is already half way over and fall will be here before we know it. To me, fall means getting back into the routine of classes, homework and studying, extracurriculars, with the occasional few hours of sleep. Before the summer is over however and there is still some time left to have fun, take a look at these top design trends of this summer while you still have time to add a little decor before getting back into the grind of fall.

HGTV has collected some of the best design trends of summer 2016, and I’m here to elaborate and critique them to let you know what I think is a trend here to stay and last throughout the year.

  1. Bright and White:

    • While light, neutral white tones are definitely more of a warm weather trend, these colors are definitely not just for three months of the year. Keeping a room white and bright let’s more light come through, and makes a small apartment room seem a lot bigger than it is.
  2. Playful Statement Sculptures:

    • Some sculptures at high-end boutiques may seem a bit pricey for what they are (if you can even tell what they are), but this is what places like HomeGoods and Pier One Imports is for. Don’t be afraid to add a small creative piece on a coffee table to make the place fun and unique. (Tip: if you’re feeling risky and are willing to online shop for this kind of stuff, check out http://wayfair.com.)
  3. Boho-Cali Chic:

    • Just because Boston may not share California’s all-year summer weather, does not mean we can’t decorate like they do. Boho-Cali chic is becoming popular in a lot of trends, whether it be clothes or home decor. It has a vintage, relaxed touch, making any room seem casual and comfortable while still being trendy.
  4. Color Pops:

    • Small but Bold: Adding onto the bright and white room, incorporate a bright colored chair or fun eccentric plant or throw pillow to really accent the neutral and light colors. This is definitely not just a summer trend, because there is always an excuse to be bold and fun when decorating an apartment, especially for a young professional.
  5. Brass is back:

    • This trend caught my attention because it ties in with just about every trend I just talked about. In a light room, having a playful brass sculpture is unique, and it definitely can be boho-cali chic. It may not be a “color” pop, but it definitely makes a statement in a room. A good tip is to add brass knobs to any dresser for a creative twist on a boring piece of furniture. Check out this website for some cheap brass doorknobs.

While these were just a few of HGTV’s design trends of this summer, I believe these are the ones to take the most note of, because they’re not just popular trends during the summer season. So get moving to you’re place and start decorating, before the leaves start falling and classes begin yet again.
