Young millennials are hesitant to rent or buy a place in such a pricey area as Boston.
It seems like a better deal to go to some other city, get a great apartment for a fraction of the cost, and just learn to love a different area, but we all know there is no city like Boston.
So, why spend more money to live near beantown, even though you could make it work elsewhere?
Well, there are a few key reasons. First off, the jobs here in Boston generally pay well (and you can work your way up the job ladder somewhere), and these jobs are usually around and with motivated coworkers who genuinely love what they do and care about the workplace and the city they work in. There is no friend quite like a masshole, and making friends in the workplace is not only good socially but also for future job opportunities and connections.
In addition to the jobs and the people around your work life, there is just so much to do in Boston that having a big apartment does not seem to matter when all you wanna do is explore the city and get out of the house. Being in Boston (unless its during a snowstorm) means endless activities and places you can go rather than being cooped up in your apartment.
A lot of people that move away from Boston for either work, financial, or family related reasons, usually want to turn around and come right back because they miss it so quickly. After leaving though, it can be hard to pick up everything and move again right away, and often people get stuck somewhere just wishing they hadn’t left in the first place.
Having roommates, subletting your apartment, and navigating the real estate market in the best possible way can be a great way to make the costly city of Boston worth it to live in. Being here definitely pays off in the long run, between job opportunities, activities and places to go, the people you meet, and the overall city pride that everyone has. Don’t get scared and shy away just because you’re nervous about the payments, because after all, there is no city quite like this one.
